Flashback: Shanghai Student Protest

by Chris 22. December 2011 18:18

The protester is the Person of the Year according to Time magazine, but protests have been a way to express frustration and displeasure forever. CTV News Stox looks back to a wave of protests that happened in China 25 years ago.

It started on December 5, 1986 when students at the University of Science and Technology in Hefei held a meeting to protest their inability to nominate candidates for the People’s Congress. On December 9 the students demonstrated for three hours, and authorities agreed to postpone the election. News of the success of the demonstration spread to other campuses and on December 23, 1986 CTV’s Roger Smith filed this report from Shanghai where students asked for democracy and freedom.

The Wright Brothers or How Time Flies

by Chris 8. December 2011 00:00

It's December, which means Wright Brothers Day is coming up to commemorate the Wright brothers' first successful flight in heavier-than-air, mechanically propelled craft. The feat was accomplished on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

At the turn of the last century, after much time spent observing birds in flight, Orville and Wilbur experimented at Kitty Hawk with kites, gliders, and a wind tunnel they built to test wing design. They are given credit for building the world's first successful airplane with aircraft controls that enabled them to steer the plane. That first aircraft, named Flyer, made its maiden flight for 12 seconds and 120 feet (about 36-37 meters).

In 1905, the Wright brothers built an airplane that could fly for more than half an hour at a time. Three years later, Orville made the world's first flight of over one hour at Fort Myer, Virginia, in a demonstration for the U.S. army. That same year Wilbur made over 100 flights near Le Mans, France; the longest one, on Dec. 31, a record flight: 2 hours, 19 minutes.

The brothers never married. Wilbur Wright died at age 45 of typhoid. Orville Wright died of a heart attack at age 77.

Here, in honour of the Wright brothers, we take a look at flight over time. See if you can spot some well-known political figures boarding (or leaving) the planes.

Population Explosion: 7 billion +

by Chris 23. November 2011 19:57

The United Nations estimates that the world population hit seven billion on October 31, 2011. We’re multiplying by leaps and bounds. Consider that human civilization has increased by about six billion people since the year 1800, but only by one billion people in the 90,000 years prior.  Eight billion is predicted by 2025, only 14 years from now. Excuse me. Pardon me. May I get by? Thank you!

Movember!

by Chris 2. November 2011 23:00

It's Movember (Nov. 1 - 30) and moustaches are sprouting across Canada and around the world!

The movement began in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, where originators joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring back the moustache. In order to justify their "Mo"(Aussie slang for moustache), they used their new looks to raise awareness and money for men's health, specifically for prostate cancer research.

The movement has taken off. To date, Movember has raised $176 million dollars worldwide, from 1.1 million participants. In 2010, nearly 110,000 Canadians participated, raising a total of $22.3 million.

CTV News Stox offers "Mo Bros" everywhere support and inspiration in this week's stock-footage montage, in homage to the moustache!

Girls Play Football!

by Chris 20. October 2011 02:49

Earlier this month, Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson's only daughter, joined her school's football team. She became the first girl ever to do so in the history of her Los Angeles private school.

It's old hat here in Canada, namely in Moose Jaw,Saskatchewan, where two high school girls decided they'd rather play football than stand on the sidelines and cheer.

This CTV story, reported by Wayne Mantyka, aired on October 19, 1986.
