Blessed Mother Teresa

Blessed Mother Teresa devoted her life to caring for the sick, the poor and the outcast. She founded the Catholic order of nuns, the Missionaries of Charity, in Calcutta, India in October, 1950. She went on to establish Nirmal Hriday, a hospice where the terminally ill could die with dignity, and also a leper colony called Shanti Nagar. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work. A heart condition forced her retirement and she passed away in 1997. Within two years of Mother Teresa’s death, the process to declare her a saint began, hastened by a special dispensation issued by Pope John Paul II. She was beatified on October 19, 2003, reaching the ranks of the blessed in the shortest time in the history of the church.
